We recently collaborated with Prarambha to host a hands-on workshop for the KU Department of Architecture, moving through the full lifecycle of an earthen build. Over two intensive days, students stepped out of the studio and onto the site, evolving from designers into true practitioners.
Day 01: The Science & Preparation 🧪 The journey began with the "why" and "how." We focused on material science—testing soil composition, understanding sieve curves, making sample blocks, and preparing the site. Before we build, we must understand the "DNA" of the earth beneath our feet. A practitioner’s work starts long before the wall goes up.
Day 02: The Build & Co-Design 🔨 Theory turned into physical reality. The students engaged in a collective effort to bring the structure to life:
- Formwork Erection: Setting the stage for the monolithic structure.
- Mix Preparation: Achieving the perfect moisture balance for stabilization.
- The Ramming Process: The rhythmic, heavy-duty work of transforming loose earth into solid stone.
- Mortar Capping: Finishing with precision to ensure longevity and protection.
Through this process of co-design, these students didn't just follow a plan—they lived it. They experienced firsthand the meticulous craft and physical labor required to create a sustainable, resilient, and "Ramro" built environment.
